The Petition: What, Where, When, Why & How?

Basis
The columnist Helen Thomas has recently referred to the "deafening silence" of the Church with regard to the enormities
of the Bush administration. She refers to a sad fact which the Church must answer for. It is true that denominational
heads, bishops, and pastors here and there have been vocal in their public opposition to the extraordinary brutality and
injustice fostered by our executive branch, but their testimony only makes the general silence of parish clergy more
obvious and troubling.

This petition offers the opportunity to the ordained leaders of the Church to speak in their role as citizens. By signing
this petition, no clergyperson can reasonably be charged with "preaching politics." Nor can he or she be accused of
"speaking for the Church." We speak not from the authority of our office, but from the right and responsibility of
citizenship.

Goal
Our long term goal is to publish this petition, with the list of signatories grouped by denomination, in the New York
Times
. Our immediate goal is to use our accrued funds for occasional advertisements in various publications to raise the general awareness of this enterprise.

Who is invited to sign the petition?
The petition solicits the signatures of Christian clergy ONLY; i.e., those who have been ordained to the ministry of Word
and Sacrament in the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches, and the
mainline denominations of the
Protestant tradition. Those clergy outside this definition will not have their names published. Please take special care to
check the list of mainline Protestant denominations, as any contribution you make is non-refundable.

How do I sign?
Complete the application form and submit the registration fee by credit card (via PayPal). The fee is necessary to pay for
the publication of the petition.

What is the fee?
The required fee is $25.00 to pay for the cost of advertising.
Larger donations are also welcomed. Additional gifts of money are acceptable ONLY from clergy as they are identified above. We will not accept gifts from anyone outside the clergy or from agencies.

What happens to the registration fee and all extra gifts of money if the petition results in a surplus of money or if
the petition fails to raise enough money?
In either case, monies received will be donated to The Carter Center. No application fees will be returned to individual
donors.

How do I know my money is going to be used in the manner described?
Paypal requires a separate bank account to receive the funds. That account has been established at Wells River Bank in
Fairlee, Vermont. It is a non-interest bearing personal checking account under one name. No withdrawals of any kind will
be made from that account until it can be withdrawn to pay for publication. The account will receive registration fees and
gifts electronically. Every donor will receive confirmation of his/her contribution via e-mail, and a total of funds received to
date will be published on this website along with the list of signatories.

In addition, I am
PayPal verified - click the seal below for confirmation and details.

How is the petition being circulated? How did it come to me?
Yearbooks from most of the churches and denominations were used to circulate the petition. Where church polity and
ecclesiastical discipline have discouraged the dissemination from national offices for various reasons, we have sought
distribution through local agencies and individuals.
